Suri has matured since The Death of Vishnu and The Age of Shiva — his characters have become more nuanced, his plots more ambitious. Unleashes Balram's ruthlessness/frustration/anger quite forcefully. The author has tried to imbibe too many things into the story without focusing on anything in particular. She exclaims , ”I was besotted.” Then there was the trip with author Manil Suri ( The Death of Vishnu), that included a trip to Kerala and Madras. The City of Devi by Manil Suri: Manil Suri is perhaps best known for his first novel The Death of Vishnu, which was long-listed for the Booker and shortlisted for the 2002 PEN/Faulkner Award. I found the mythological mix in the story very weird and it is what that disappointed me. Manil Suri's latest novel 'The Age of Shiva' is due out in February, 2008. It lacks the profundity of “A Fine Balance”, but isn't pretentious either, like many other so called successful novels (The Inheritance of Loss, Death of Vishnu). The Death of Vishnu was even nominated for the Booker, so well worth a go. I read Death of Vishnu several years ago and although I was a bit lost with some of the mythology in that book, I was still enthralled by the story. 'The Age of Shiva' Suri 's second book is forthcoming soon .
